The world of Artisan Blogging
So, I’ve talked a lot about the advantages of Artisan Blogging, now I want to highlight a selection of the many great blogs out there that highlight artisan work.
I’ll start off with a selection of australian blogs, as the movement seems to be particularly strong in that part of the world.
The porcelain piece below is by Shannon Garcon and is highlighted in the Umbrella Collective blog, an inspiration for my group blog initiative.
Florence Forrest, the artist behind the Umbrella collective, explained to me recently the rationale behind the group blog:
The Umbrella Collective blog is like our own designer style blog. It’s still developing of course as these things do. It’s a place whereall of our work can be shown cased in one place. This is often an easyway for people who like our work to bookmark us all in one go and Ioften find that it is The Umbrella Collective blog that is put intopeople sidebar for that reason.
Also, when each of us gets any exposure in the media, thecollective/blogging angle is always of interest to reporters and thisleads to mutual exposure for the group.
We combine the blog with any exposure we get for our Christmas showas a way for people to see what they will be able to see when theycome. It’s easier than having a long list of individual sites.
All of our work reflects well on the other, when the standard is high it appears even higher when grouped among peers.

Mel Robson is another unique ceramic artist from Australia and I really like her latest blog about the adventures of the little people in Sandwich Mountain. I think artists who take risks and build fantasy around their art are very compelling.

Hi Paul,
did you know that Mel Robson is a friend of ours here in Brisbane? We introduced her to the world of blogging and hasn’t looked back as you can see.
Just to clarify for your readers - I didn’t start the Umbrella Collective but I did initiate the blogging side of it and am still the admin for our blog.
I encourage all craft artists to explore their practice by blogging, one can learn so much about one’s self. It’s remarkable how it can fast track your professionalisation and bring exposure to your work.
It is work but its rewards are worth it.
