Inhabitat is one of my favourite design blogs. They focus very much on sustainable living and like many other blogs, they are making gift suggestions at the moment. I particularly like the post they have done on winter knitwear items. All of these are either organic or recycled products and they look really stylish as well. It might be a bit late for a christmas purchase, but the winter has plenty of legs in it yet…at least here in Ireland anyway.

Any designers out there who might be interested in getting involved in the design of fair trade artisan products might want to check this out:
Designers are invited to support the objectives of Eco Design Lab an organisation that is funded by Discovered In to help incubate artisan based worker cooperatives in the poor communities of developing nations such as Brazil. The projects will be delivered by local NGOs to provide affordable workspace, skills training, business education and financial support.People in poor communities do not have access to information about fashion and design trends, so often make elaborate handcrafted products that are not highly valued. To solve the dilemma designers are invited to register with Eco Design Lab and receive monthly design briefs. Designs can then be submitted for review and voting on the website and winning designs will be produced. The designers receive a royalty on the sales of the items.
Products designed for Eco Design Lab will be produced in the
communities and distributed internationally under the Tiptoe brand name
by Discovered In.
Eco Design Lab its sister site, does seem to be in transition at the moment though, so I’m not sure if they are taking submissions at the moment?

Oxfam Ireland has launched a website for Fair Trade products.
It is a registered Fair Trade Organisation and is the only member of IFAT (The International Fairtrade Association) in Ireland.
They have a range of products including crafts, fashion and jewellery, food, coffee, toys and gifts. I occasionally review Fair Trade products from the UK on this site, so it’s good to see that we have irish alternatives also.
Wish them well.

Ragbags are fashionable products made from recycled plastic bags collected by «ragpickers» in the slums of New Delhi.
The project is already creating jobs for 50 ragpickers, people at
collection centers and fabricators (mainly woman) in New Delhi. It is
providing them and their families ‘means of livelihood’ and gain access
to more opportunities.
They are now expanding their product line to include back packs, personal organisers and wallets.
